LSUA Honors Local High School Seniors as "Talented Tenth"

Released: 01/11/2007

LSU Alexandria’s Office of Multicultural Affairs recognized 66 African American high school seniors at its annual Talented Tenth program held at the Alexandria Museum of Art on Jan. 9.

According to author and sociologist, W. E. B. Dubois, of every ten African American students, one is superior. Dubois named this elite group the “Talented Tenth,” according to Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs Dessie Williams.

The program honored those exceptional students who have excelled academically and are pursuing leadership roles in their communities and on their campuses.

The keynote speaker was Toya Owens-Shepard, founder and owner of First Impression Image Consulting and First Impression School of Etiquette. Other speakers included Ron G. Smith, Sr., senior residential and commercial developer for CLECO; Connie Cooper, LSUA SG president; Shelly Kieffer, LSUA admissions counselor/recruiter; Ronnell Stewart, LSUA financial aid counselor; and Dr. Dee Slavant, director of student services.
