YouthLearn@LSUA Classes for Summer

YouthLearn@LSUA is a special series of programs recommended for students in grades 6-12. The workshops and classes provide "hands-on" opportunities for self-enrichment in a fun and challenging environment. The educational programs are developed for students with at least a "B" average. These classes are not intended for students having challenges in these areas. <p> The classes being offered are listed below. </p><p> C.S.I. LSUA-Dust for fingerprints to learn who held the glass, examine sweater fibers to see what the intruder wore and study hitchhiking seeds to figure out where the suspect walked. Apply your best deductive reasoning skills to solve a mystery! </p><p> This class is for grades 6-12 and will be held July 31 from 8 a.m. until noon. The cost is $45 and Beth Lord, assistant professor of criminal justice at LSU Alexandria, will be in the instructor. </p><p> Beginner’s Photography-A fun filled class for the shutterbug at heart. Students will learn about cameras, film, special effects, lenses, filters and composition. The class will meet on July 8 from 1-5 p.m. and is for grades 6-12. The cost is $45 and the instructor is Gale Trussell. </p><p> GuardStart™ Lifeguarding Tomorrow-A program for youth that provides a foundation of aquatic and leadership knowledge, attitudes, and skills for future successful completion of the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course. Prerequisites: Ability to swim the front crawl for 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side; ability to tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs; and the ability to submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet underwater. This course is offered to students in grades 6-8 and will be held on July 9 from 12 until 4 p.m. The instructor will be Denise Evans, Certified American Red Cross Instructor. The fee is $50.00 which includes participant’s kit. </p><p> Math ACT Prep–A general review of the topics covered on the mathematics portion of the ACT exam. Test-taking strategies will be discussed. Handout will be provided. This course is open to grades 6-12 and will be held on July 1 and 2 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. The cost is $60 and Dr. Tommy Awtry, professor of mathematics at LSU Alexandria, will be the instructor. Math in Motion–Explore different types of graphs using the TI83-Plus graphing calculator with a motion detector. Students will make predictions and check results, while trying to duplicate graphs. Students will also explore algebra and geometry concepts with an origami frog jumping contest, using the TI83-Plus graphing calculator. This class is open to grades 6-9 and will be held on July 17 from 1 until 5 p.m. The instructor is Dorothy Long and the cost is $45. </p><p> Spanish Around the World-Through fun activities, this class will explore the Spanish language, culture and music. This class is for grades 6-9 and will be held on July 22 from 1 until 5 p.m. The cost is $45and the instructor will be Icel D.
