LSUA Now Offers Bachelor of Science in Mathematics Degree

Released: 10/17/2006

LSU Alexandria is now offering a new baccalaureate degree. The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics is the sixth baccalaureate degree that LSUA has begun offering since it became a four-year university in 2001.

The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics allows students to graduate with a degree that is more standard and recognizable than the previous Bachelor of Liberal Studies in Mathematics. This degree will also allow students to continue their graduate studies in mathematics. Students can also become certified to teach secondary mathematics upon graduation if they complete additional coursework in the Department of Education.

Interest has already been expressed by several students at LSUA.

“We have seen an increase in interest and a lot of people switching to a math degree,” said Dr. Thomas Awtry, chair of the Department of Mathematics and Physical Sciences.

The new bachelor’s degree also now requires students to complete a foreign language and a physics requirement.

The Bachelor of Liberal Studies in Mathematics degree is also still available.
