New gallery exhibit opens Friday, June 9

Released: 06/06/2006

The University Gallery at LSU Alexandria will feature an exhibit of fabric arts this month titled “A Myriad of Color: Fabric Art Retrospective.”

The show will open with a reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 9. Admission is free, and the public is encouraged to attend. The gallery is located in the Student Center near the bookstore.

The reception will feature an informal concert of American music from 6-6:30 p.m. by Chris Jardoin on the bass and Melva Villard on the piano. “Gallery Talk” will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a presentation by Katy Prescott.

Prescott, a studio art quilter from Baton Rouge, is educational director and past president of the Contemporary Fiber Association of Louisiana. A retired public school art teacher, she is serving her second term as secretary of the Gulf States Quilting Association, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

The University Gallery show will feature fabric art of both domestic and artistic style. The collection is being coordinated by Gallery Director Roy de Ville with the help of Patty Gamburg, Alexandria fabric artist, and Priscilla Gadel, fabric artist and owner of Priscilla’s Quilts in Alexandria.

“Curating a show as unique as this presents both a challenge and a joy,” de Ville said. “While it is out of the mainstream of the usual painting, sculpting, photography show, there is a great deal of artistic creativity to be found in these works.”
