Spring graduates announced

Released: 05/18/2006

Dr. Robert Cavanaugh presented diplomas to 183 graduates during LSU Alexandria’s spring commencement ceremony Thursday at the Alexandria Riverfront Center.

The graduating class is the largest in the university’s history.

“The growing size of the graduating class is a reflection of the fact that LSUA continues to graduate high-quality associate-degree candidates even as the number of baccalaureate degrees grows each semester,” said Dr. Thomas Armstrong, vice chancellor for academic affairs. LSUA began offering four-year degrees in 2001.

Presenting the commencement address on Thursday was U.S. Marine Corps Reserves Col. Matthew Bogdanos, who led the international investigation into the April 2003 looting of Baghdad’s Iraq Museum and wrote about it in his bestseller “Thieves of Baghdad.”

The Chancellor’s Award for the baccalaureate degree graduate with the highest overall grade-point average was presented to Denise Michelle Marquiss of Pineville, who earned a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in history. Her degree was awarded summa cum laude.

The Chancellor’s Award for the associate degree graduate with the highest overall grade-point average was presented to Clifton Roy Doughty of Pineville, who received an Associate of Science in Computer Information Technology.

Earning their baccalaureate degrees with highest honors, summa cum laude, were Marquiss, Margarette L. Alexandre of Oakdale and Johanna C. Stokes of Alexandria. All three had overall grade-point averages of 3.9 or above.

Earning baccalaureate degrees magna cum laude for attaining GPAs within the 3.7 to 3.89 range were Sylwester L. Giemza of Pineville and Kristi Leann Morin of Alexandria.

Five students earned baccalaureate degrees cum laude for attaining GPAs between 3.5 and 3.69. They are Amanda Kate Goss of Alexandria, Jessica Robin Scott of Deville, Heather Nicole Ardoin of Oakdale, Sarah Hamlin Veillon of Washington and Gabriel Joseph Guillory of Plaucheville.
