Nurse pinning ceremony May 18

Released: 05/16/2006

LSU Alexandria’s Department of Nursing will hold a pinning ceremony for its nursing graduates at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 18, in the Alexandria Riverfront Center.

The ceremony follows Spring 2006 Commencement, which begins at 10 a.m. in the center in downtown Alexandria. This is the first time that the nurse pinning ceremony has been held off campus, and the second time that commencement has moved from campus.

The steady growth of LSU Alexandria’s graduating classes is the reason why officials were forced to find larger venues to hold commencement.

The 54 nursing graduates will receive their pins and then participate in a traditional candle-lighting ceremony. The graduates will then recite the Nightingale Pledge in honor of Florence Nightingale, a pioneer and reformer of the nursing profession. The pledge is a variation of the Hippocratic Oath taken by physicians and is a traditional part of pinning ceremonies dating back to the 1800s.
