Campus to remain open

Released: 08/28/2005

Classes and offices at LSU Alexandria will remain open this week.

A portion of the campus is being used as a special-needs shelter for South Louisiana residents fleeing Hurricane Katrina. The university’s gymnasium, located in the Fitness Center, opened for special-needs evacuees on Saturday.

Plans were being made on Sunday afternoon to open the Barbara Brumfield Caffey Annex for an overflow crowd. The gymnasium holds about 250 evacuees. The Caffey Annex was being prepared for up to 200 more, officials said.

The gymnasium was last used as a special-needs shelter during Hurricane Ivan in September 2004. This will be the first time that the Caffey Annex has been converted to a special-needs shelter, Chancellor Robert Cavanaugh said.

Cavanaugh said classes will go on as usual. Any closures would be announced on the university''s Web site.
