LSU Alexandria offers Union Tank Car test prep

Released: 07/15/2005

LSU Alexandria offers help in preparing Union Tank Car applicants for their aptitude tests.

News reports have quoted parish officials as saying that some applicants are having trouble passing the adult literacy test that Union Tank Car requires of its applicants.

University officials said they offer a solution to the problem: individualized computer training that helps potential applicants prepare for the exam.

The computer-based software provides a tutoring program that allows an individual to find out where deficiencies lie and then work to improve in those areas. Once the applicant masters the skills to improve scores, the applicant then returns to the Rapides One-Stop Job Center to take the aptitude test. The software is specifically designed to help people improve grade-level scores on several basic tests, including the one used for the Union Tank Car applicants as well as the GED and ACT Assessment.

The tutorial program is offered at the Rapides Parish Technology Center in the Weldon “Bo” Nipper Building on the LSU Alexandria campus. The center is open from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays; and from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays. The Rapides One-Stop Job Center is already referring Union Tank Car job applicants to the university. Anyone who wants to sign up individually for the tutorial should call the Rapides Parish Technology Center at 473-6512 or LSU Alexandria Continuing Education at 473-6495. Officials said they can offer assistance immediately.
