Released: 05/25/2005

LSU Alexandria has been approved for membership in the Association of American Colleges and Universities.

AAC&U is the leading national association concerned with the quality, vitality and public standing of undergraduate liberal education. Its members are devoted to extending the advantage of a liberal education to all students, regardless of academic specialization or intended career. Since its founding in 1915, the membership has grown to 1,000 accredited public and private colleges and universities of every type and size.

“LSU Alexandria is pleased to join with other baccalaureate institutions which are members of the Association of American Colleges and Universities,” said Dr. Thomas Armstrong, vice chancellor for academic affairs at LSUA. “This organization has been immensely important in improving the quality of the undergraduate academic experience, strengthening general education and in developing a blueprint for higher education in the 21st century. To be a part of this organization is an important step in the maturation of LSU Alexandria as a regional, baccalaureate university serving Central Louisiana.”

AC&U functions as a catalyst and facilitator, forging links among presidents, administrators and faculty members who are engaged in institutional and curricular planning. Its mission is to reinforce the collective commitment to liberal education at both the national and local level and to help individual institutions keep the quality of student learning at the core of their work as they evolve to meet new economic and social challenges.

AAC&U’s strategic plan organizes all of its work around four broad goals: Preparing all students for an era of greater expectations; educating students for a world lived in common; making excellence inclusive; taking responsibility for the quality of every student’s liberal education.

Focusing on these goals, AAC&U runs national initiatives, sponsors meetings and summer institutes, and produces resources all designed to assist its member institutions in meeting the challenge of providing a high quality liberal education to today’s students.
