LSU Alexandria to host play by top acting company

Released: 03/14/2005

LSU Alexandria is sponsoring a special performance of William Shakespeare’s “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” by one of the nation’s top acting companies.

The play will be presented by The Acting Company at 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center in downtown Alexandria.

The Acting Company, based in New York City, is made up of actors selected from graduate programs across the nation. The group tours primarily in major universities, having performed more than 100 plays for more than 2 million people in the United States and abroad. The Acting Company has been honored with two Tony Award nominations.

“They are one of the pre-eminent acting companies in the United States. They are superb, and the acting is of the highest caliber,” said Richard Gwartney, chair of LSU Alexandria’s Department of Arts, English and Humanities. This special performance is sponsored by the Chancellor’s Arts and Humanities Committee at LSU Alexandria.

Gwartney said the new Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center has opened up opportunities for one-of-a-kind performances like the upcoming visit from The Acting Company, as well as the recent performance from the Vienna Boy’s Choir.

The presentation of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” is for audiences of all ages. The play is a comedy that boasts “crazy clowns, baffled bandits, sassy servants and an unforgettable ill-mannered dog.”

Tickets can be purchased at the Coughlin-Saunders Box Office between 1-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and one hour before show time, or through LSU Alexandria’s Office of Auxiliary Services from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Coughlin-Saunders Box Office can be reached at 318-767-2600. For general information about the performance, call 318-473-6581.

Tickets are $15 for the general public and $5 for all students and LSU Alexandria faculty and staff members.
