Free health screening Feb. 19 at LSU Alexandria

Released: 02/11/2005

Residents concerned about their cardiovascular well-being are invited to a free health screening and forum on Saturday, Feb. 19, at LSU Alexandria.

Pre-registration is required for the Free Forum, in which participants will receive screening for cholesterol (HDL and LDL), triglycerides and Lipoprotein “a.” The testing will be conducted from 7-9 a.m. in the LSU Alexandria gymnasium in the Fitness Center on campus, following by a presentation from 9-10 a.m.

The Lipoprotein “a” screen can determine if someone is predisposed to heart disease. It is quickly becoming another important tool to help people monitor their heart health.

The screening offered free of charge on Feb. 19 is a blood test that requires fasting beginning at midnight. However, participants will be able to take their medicines that morning. Light refreshments will be served after the test.

After the screening, Dr. Rita Ellerbrook with Helena Laboratories will give a presentation on cardiovascular health and how test results for Lipoprotein “a” enter into the overall picture for determining predisposition to cardiovascular health or disease.

The Free Forum is being presented in conjunction with a research project being conducted by LSU Alexandria’s Allied Health Department. The department will study the overall health status of 100 Central Louisiana residents. Volunteers will be asked questions about their health habits and then receive follow-up testing in six months. People who wish to join the study can sign up at the Free Forum.

The Free Forum is presented by LSU Alexandria and KALB. Sponsors include Helena Laboratories, CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital, Rapides Regional Medical Center and Huey P. Long Medical Center.
