LSU Alexandria’s international study program got a significant financial boost with a $1,000 donation from Paragon Casino Resort and about $1,000 more in contributions from faculty, staff and students.

The donations are for the university’s International Fund, which provides financial support for LSU Alexandria students interested in studying abroad.

“This is a wonderful gift from Paragon, one that is going to make a huge difference in the lives of several LSUA students,” said Dr. Annette Olsen-Fazi, faculty adviser to LSU Alexandria’s Students for International Relations. “It’s very encouraging to see the community become excited about our new international program, helping our university grow and prosper. I’d like to encourage other businesses and members of the community to get involved in this incredibly worthwhile project.”

Olsen-Fazi, an associate professor of English, said the organization raised about $600 during a recent raffle on campus. Schnack’s Jewelry and Patton’s Jewelry each donated items for the raffle. In addition, the organization raised roughly $400 in individual donations.

The fund and student organization are part of the university’s effort to bolster its international education program. As part of that effort, the university recently signed an affiliation with International Studies Abroad, an international organization that handles the practical details involved in sending students overseas for academic studies, including awarding scholarships to students.
