English honor society to induct first members

Released: 10/07/2004

In another first made possible by LSU Alexandria’s four-year status, the campus’ first chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the nation’s oldest English honor society, will induct eight charter members Oct. 22. Members will be pinned during a private, candlelight initiation ceremony on campus, said Dr. Ginger Jones, associate professor of English and the organization’s faculty sponsor. “Starting a chapter is important for LSUA,” Jones said. “We’re trying to nurture our English students. The kids are really enthusiastic about it.” One of the requirements for starting a local chapter is that the university must have four-year status, she said. Membership offers students award and scholarship opportunities. Members also enjoy the chance to have their critical and creative writings published in the organization’s national newsletter and publications. According to the Sigma Tau Delta website, being a member gives students “the opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding achievements, enrich their education, help them make career choices and advance their careers.” To join, a student must have an overall grade-point average of 2.8 with at least a 3.0 in English. The applicant also must have at least sophomore standing and have taken a minimum of two English courses beyond the usual requirements in freshman English. The local chapter is not limited to LSU Alexandria students. Faculty and staff members who meet the requirements are encouraged to join and enjoy the benefits the organization has to offer, Jones said. In fact, Dr. Annette Olsen-Fazi, associate professor of English, will be inducted with the group on Oct. 22. The seven student members are Jessica Scott of Deville, Jessica Goynes of Dry Prong, Julie Thibodeaux of Ville Platte, Bridget Clark of Pollock, Bill Martin of Pineville, Connie Cooper of Alexandria and Gabriel Guillory of Plaucheville.
