LSU Alexandria Continuing Education offers several non-credit hobby courses each semester. In April, these courses cover nature, making beaded jewelry, and photography.

Bead Creations is a 12-hour course that will be taught by local craftswoman Kriss Self. The course will be held on Tuesdays, April 13, 20, 27 and May 4 from 4 until 7 p.m. on the LSU Alexandria campus. Participants will learn to make jewelry with off-loom beadweaving techniques using a needle, thread, and seed beads. The $150 course fee includes all of the necessary materials.

Nature lovers and novice photographers can take part in the Spring Walk in the Woods (Exploring Nature) with Gale Trussell on Saturday, April 24, from 8:30 until 11:30 a.m. This three-hour course will be an exploration of the varied natural heritage of the central Louisiana forests. Participants will visit two sites, one in the upland piney woods, the other in the Red River swampland to see how differently spring unfolds in these diverse habitats. Along the way, participants will help identify flowers, lower plant forms, trees, shrubs, birds and how each of these contributes to the environment and ecology of the area. There is a $35 fee for this course, and participants will need to provide their own transportation, plus dress for lots of walking.

For those who like to take pictures and want to learn how to do it better, you can take advantage of the Beginning Photography course on Tuesday, April 27, from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. Join travel writer Gale Trussell outdoors and catch the beauty of the Louisiana landscape in photographs. Trussell will teach participants the proper use of film, camera techniques, lenses, filters, special effects, use of a tripod and composition. Other topics will include how to get great pictures on dark days and how to get more light into your camera. This course is a fun "hands on" experience. Cameras are not required for this three-hour course, but participants should dress for the outdoors and walking. The fee for this course is $35.

Pre-registration with payment of fees is required for all courses.
