After more than 20 years on the campus "wish list," an on-site child care center will soon become a reality at Louisiana State Unversity at Alexandria. The University will host an official groundbreaking ceremony for the LSUA Children´s Center on Thursday, October 29, 1998, at 10 a.m. on the campus. Construction is set to begin in November.

"An on-site child care facility will have a tremendous impact on the students who attend LSUA," said Chancellor Robert Cavanaugh. "Many of our students are older and are balancing the responsibilities of families and jobs in addition to their college coursework," he said. "This center will help these students overcome the challenge of finding appropriate care and education for their young children."

The LSUA Children´s Center will be a Class A Licensed child care facility to serve the LSUA community. The building was designed by Bill Tudor of CTA Architects and will be constructed by Tudor, Inc.

Private gifts through the LSUA Foundation will provide funding for the construction of the center. Additional funding through several local foundations has been requested to assist with start-up costs including equipment, furnishings and initial operating expenses.

The 4,246 square foot building will provide early care and learning opportunities for approximately 48 children. It will include four activity rooms, a small warming kitchen, a director´s office and reception area, and a multi-purpose room. The center is tentatively set to open in May 1999.

For more information about the LSUA Children´s Center project, contact Missy LaBorde, director of Institutional Advancement at 473-6472 or Rosemary Robertson-Smith, director of the LSUA Children´s Center at 473-6484
