LSUA CONTINUING EDUCATION OFFERINGS FOR MARCH

<p> The Louisiana State University at Alexandria Division of Continuing Education and Technology is offering a variety of non-credit courses for the LSUA campus and community in March. All courses meet on the LSUA campus unless otherwise noted. All courses also require pre-registration by contacting the Division at 473-6495. </p><p> The "Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit Course" will be offered on Monday and Tuesday, March 6 and 7. The course will meet from 5:45 p.m. until 9:15 p.m. There is a $70 fee for the 9 hour course. </p><p> Participants must provide gun and ammunition for the live range portion of the class which will be the participant&acute;s choice of either Saturday or Sunday, March 25or 26. </p><p>

Individuals applying to the Department of Public Safety for a permit to carry a concealed weapon must demonstrate competence with a handgun. This course is approved by the Department of Public Safety and Corrections to meet that requirement of the law. Other requirements will be explained during the course which includes 7 hours of classroom instruction, 2 hours of actual live range fire and proper handgun cleaning procedures. Officer John Lummus, a Peace Officer Standards and Training certified instructor, will teach the course. </p><p> "Introduction to Microsoft Windows 98" will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursday, March 7, 9, and 14. The cost of the course is $90.25 and the class will meet in Oakland Hall from 6-9 p.m each evening. </p><p> Dr. Lawanda Smith, computing services analyst, will teach participants how to successfully navigate Microsoft&acute;s newest operating system. Some of the topics to be covered are basic file management, customizing Windows 98, the desktop, using the mouse, and working with Windows. </p><p> The Blues Brothers 2000 movie and the "Dock of the Bay" Coffee Call will follow the journey from the song to the hit movie. This event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 14 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Alexandria Museum of Art in downtown Alexandria. </p><p> Coffee Calls provide an opportunity to meet with LSUA faculty members for coffee and conversation in their field of study. Coffee Calls are brought to you as a public service at no charge and are sponsored by the Bank of Lecompte. Pre-registration is still required. </p><p> Dr. Greg Gormanous, professor of psychology and division head, Liberal Arts, will lead the group on this musical journey. Steve Cropper, guitarist and songwriter, plays the "Colonel" in the Blues Brothers movies. His song credits include "Midnight Hour," "Dock of the Bay," "Knock on Wood," and many others. Other musicians featured include B.B. King, Otis Redding, B. B. Major and Grady Gaines. Participants will hear great blues music and also watch some classic music videos. </p><p> "Preparing for the Mathematics Portion of the ACT exam" will give a general review of the topics covered on the mathematics portion of the ACT exam. The course will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, March 22 and 23 from 4-7 p.m. in Oakland Hall. The fee is $38 and the instructor will be Dr. Thomas Awtry, associate professor of mathematics at LSUA. Test taking strategies will be discussed and handouts will be given. </p><p> Pre-registration is required for all classes.
