LSU Alexandira Offers Non-Credit Classes in October

LSU Alexandria Continuing Education will offer a variety of non-credit classes in October that provide opportunities for professional and personal growth, development, self-enrichment, wellness and fitness. Pre-registration is required for all classes. <p> ACT Math Prep-This class offers a general review of the topics covered on the mathematics portion of the ACT exam. Test taking strategies will be discusses and handouts will be provided. It will be held Wednesday and Thursday, October 22 and 23 from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. The fee is $60. </p><p> Aquacise-This course is designed to use water’s natural buoyancy and resistance to help improve physical fitness, mental alertness, and emotional health. It is held weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 until 9:55 a.m. in the LSU Alexandria pool. The fee is $35 per month. </p><p> Aerobic Deep Water Exercise- This is a no impact program performed in deep water within the capabilities of most people with arthritis. It is not necessary to know how to swim. It is held weekly on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 until 4:25 p.m. in the LSU Alexandria pool. The fee is $35 per month.Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program Plus Shallow Water-All activities are performed in shallow water and are within the capabilities of most people with arthritis. It is not necessary to know how to swim. There are two sections: Section 1 – Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 2:30 until 3:25 p.m; Section 2 – Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 until 5:25 p.m. Each section costs $35 per month and meets in the LSU Alexandria pool. </p><p> Beginning Photography-This course will teach you the proper use of film, camera techniques, lenses, filters, special effects, use of a tripod, and composition. Other topics include how to photograph friends and family, how to get great pictures on dark days, and how to get more light into the camera. This is a fun, “hands on” experience. No cameras required. It will be held Thursday, October 30 from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. The fee is $35. </p><p> Business Finance for Non-financial Managers/Staff-Get a better grasp of the “numbers” side of the business. This class is designed to assist non-financial managers and staff members in understanding and effectively using the basic business finance concepts. It will be held Saturday, October 25 from 8 until 5 p.m. The fee is $200. </p><p> Cartooning 101-Have fun with the funnies! Learn the basics of cartooning. Create cartoons and take your first step into animation. It will be held Mondays and Thursdays, October 20, 23, 27 and 30 from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. The fee is $65. </p><p> Computer Typing-Learn the “touch” method of typing – perfect for anyone who has never used a computer keyboard before and a great refresher course for those who have not typed in a while. It will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 7, 9, 14, 16 and 21 from 3 until 5 p.m. The fee is $130 which includes a text. </p><p> Conversational Spanish-This course emphasizes conversation, one-way communication and understanding spoken Spanish. It will be held October 1, 2, 6, 7, and 8 from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. The fee is $120, which includes the text and an audio tape. </p><p> Effective Public Speaking, “The Roar of the Crowd”-Have you ever dreamed of hearing the “roar of the crowd,” but sweaty palms or uncertainty kept you from taking action? This fun and interactive course explores the basic skills you need to create and deliver high quality, effective presentations and speeches. It will be held Tuesdays, October 7, 14, 21, and 28 from 6 until 9 p.m. The fee is $180. </p><p> Food Basics: Secrets of a Gourmet Chef-From large weddings to intimate dinner parties, Chef Fett has fed them all. Join him to learn how to cook the flavors of the world and professional kitchen secrets that are sure to bring a touch of gourmet to your cooking. Participants will need to bring their own cutting board, as well as, a paring and chef’s knife. It will be held Mondays, October 13, 20, 27 and November 3, 10, and 17 from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m. The fee is $110 and the location of the class is to be announced. </p><p> French for Beginners-If you want to learn how to speak French, try this conversational approach for beginners where you’ll learn the basics to use in traveling, for professional purposes, or just for fun. It will be held Mondays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 6 until 9 p.m. The fee is $110. </p><p> Home Based Businesses–Federal Tax Issues-Dreaming of owning your own business? Come learn how to make Uncle Sam a junior partner! It will be held Thursday, October 23 from 5 until 9 p.m. The fee is $65. </p><p> Introduction to Medical Billing-This class will provide you with a working knowledge of the medical billing process used in the medical field which will enable you to function in all coding and reimbursement tasks. It will be held Tuesdays and Wednesdays, October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29 and November 4, 5, 11, 12 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The fee is $200. </p><p> Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit Course and Renewal of Permit-Persons applying to the Department of Public Safety for a permit to carry a concealed weapon must demonstrate competence with a handgun. This course is approved by the department and also meets requirements for those applying for renewal of their permit. The course includes nine hours of instruction and two hours of actual live range fire and proper handgun cleaning procedures. The classroom instruction will be held Monday and Tuesday, October 6 and 7 from 5:45 until 9:15 p.m. The Live range fire dates are Oct. 24 or 26. The fee is $80. </p><p> Marketing Fundamentals & Principles-This course is the first in an eight-part series. Participants will learn hands-on applications of the various concepts and how to tailor strategies for the best results. It will be held October 2 from 8:30 a.m. until12:30 p.m. The fee is $110. </p><p> Marketing Communication & Promotion-This course is the second in an eight-part series. Participants will move toward implementing a marketing plan. Explore various promotional tools that are available and put them to work for you. Understand the basic steps to promoting your product. It will be held Thursday, October 23 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The fee is $110. </p><p> Microsoft FrontPage (Beginner Web Page Design)-Learn how to create simple web pages for personal or small business use. Prerequisites: Basic computer and keyboarding skills. It will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 21, 23, 28 and 30 from 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. The fee is $155, which includes a text. </p><p> Microsoft PowerPoint-Learn the fundamentals of maneuvering in PowerPoint to create slide presentations and more. Prerequisites: Basic computer and keyboarding skills. It will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 7, 9, 14, and 16 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. The fee is $155, which includes text. </p><p> Morally Responsible Financial Planning-Learn how to save and prepare for the future by using morally responsible investments and budgeting. It will be held Tuesday, October 28 from 6 until 9 p.m. The fee is $50. </p><p> Personal Financial Planning-LSU Alexandria Continuing Education is part of the Louisiana Insurance and Financial Consortium. Through this consortium, LSU Alexandria Continuing Education provides insurance and financial education to professional insurance and financial practitioners, private corporations, and the general public. This course will be held Tuesdays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 7 until 9 p.m. The fee is $200. </p><p> Pre-Licensing Life/Health-As part of the Louisiana Insurance and Financial Consortium, LSU Alexandria Continuing Education provides insurance and financial education to professional insurance and financial practitioners, private corporations, and the general public. This course will be held Fridays and Saturdays, October 17, 18, 24 and 25 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The fee is $200. </p><p> Sign Language-Beginners will learn the basics of sign language and how to communicate in exact English using signs. Participants will learn how to sign simple phrases, sentences, and more. It will be held Tuesdays, October 14 and 21 from 6 until 9 p.m. The fee is $90 which includes text. </p><p> Windows (Introduction)-A basic operating systems course which covers the Taskbar, My Computer, the Desktop, Windows Explorer, changing settings, finding files, using Help, and moving, sizing, opening and closing Windows. Prerequisite: Basic computer knowledge and proficiency with a mouse. It will be held Tuesdays, October 7, 14, and 21 from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The fee is $155, which includes a text. </p><p> Pre-registration is required for all classes.
