LSUA January Coffee Calls

<p> The Louisiana State University at Alexandria Division of Continuing Education and Technology is offering two Coffee Calls in January. Coffee Calls provide an opportunity to meet with LSUA faculty members for coffee and conversation in their field of study. Coffee Calls are brought to you as a public service at no charge and are sponsored by the Bank of Lecompte. </p><p> Italy Travel Course 2001-A Coffee Call for the Italy Travel Course 2001 will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 23 from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Richard Gwartney, assistant professor of speech and director of theatre and forensics, and Roy deVille, professor of fine arts and director of University Gallery, will provide an introduction to LSUA&acute;s planned travel course to Italy in May. They will review historic sites to be included in the tour. </p><p> The New Emphasis on Mental Mathematics-Dr. Tommy Awtry, associate professor of mathematics, will discuss the emphasis on mental mathematics. This Coffee Call will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics recommends the use of mental mathematics as a student algorithm for some problem situations. Mental Mathematics, unlike estimation, involves finding exact answers mentally. Dr. Awtry will teach this technique and provide practice in mental mathematics. </p><p> Pre-registration is required for these Coffee Calls by calling the LSUA Division of Continuing Education and Technology at 473-6495 or 473-6445. </p>
