OSMS and LSUA Form Partnership

Released: 11/12/2001

Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Specialists (OSMS), Rapides Regional Medical Center and Rapides Sports Medicine are working with Louisiana State University at Alexandria (LSUA) to ensure the safety and health of LSUA students-- particularly those participating in the school´s intramural sports program.

OSMS has offered to provide a trainer to visit the campus each week to provide medical coverage for all intramural programs regarding injuries or preventive measures to avoid injuries. The group will also provide physicals for all intramural athletes and will sponsor t-shirts for the intramural sports program.

"We are excited that Rapides and OSMS approached us about the intramural sports program," said LSUA Chancellor Dr. Robert Cavanaugh. "We´ve had a strong flag-football and basketball competition on our campus for years, and with the increased number of students on campus, we are looking to expand the intramural program."

The partnership will also assist students who are not direct participants in the intramural sports program. The doctors will conduct classroom and informal lectures open to large numbers of LSUA students regarding sports medicine and orthopaedic problems .

According to Cavanaugh, this is a perfect example of how community businesses can partner with the university to bring resources to students. "As we grow to four-year status, there will likely be increased opportunities for partnerships such as this one with OSMS," he said. "We appreciate the generosity of Rapides Regional Medical Center and OSMS and are excited about this new partnership and the benefit it will bring to our students."
