Senior offers advice for prospective students

Released: 03/26/2013

Before Sendy Johnson graduated from high school, she knew she wanted to earn a college degree and go to law school. Even though her dream has taken a bit longer than she anticipated, she is determined to make it a reality.

Johnson graduated from high school in 2003 and began as a freshman at LSU Alexandria that fall. Financial issues caused the single mom to suspend her college goals a time or two, but only briefly.

"I had to do what I had to do,” she said. “But I finally said, ‘I have to finish!’”Johnson is set to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. Since she has a newborn, she will suspend her plans for law school until Fall 2014.

She said starting college is “not as overwhelming as you may think,” but she encourages prospective students to participate in campus-sponsored events to familiarize themselves with the campus.

"If I could do anything differently, I would have come to one of the information sessions,” she said. “I was scared to ask questions because I didn’t know who to ask. At the information sessions, they answer those questions for you!”

A Q&A information session for adult learners is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26. The “March Back 2 College” event will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Brumfield Caffey Annex on LSU Alexandria campus. Representatives from financial aid, admissions, and several academic departments will be on hand to answer prospective students’ questions. There is no charge for participation in the March Back 2 College event.
