Released: 05/25/2012

Catherine Pears, executive director of the Alexandria Museum of Art, has earned the "Louisiana Museum Professional" Award for museum directors with five to 10 years experience as a museum director. The award was presented earlier this month at the annual conference of the Louisiana Association of Museums.

As director of the Alexandria Museum of Art, Pears is responsible for day to day operations as well as strategic planning and fundraising for the facility. Governed by a board of directors, the museum is part of LSU Alexandria. Pears continues her work to move the museum toward self-sufficiency during challenging budgetary constraints. The best-known of the museum's fundraising activities under Pears' leadership is the Louisiana Dragon Boat Races held each May on the Red River in Alexandria. The annual event draws thousands to the riverfront in Alexandria for friendly competition, food and fun.

The mission of the Alexandria Museum of Art is to preserve, exhibit and promote visual art throughout central Louisiana in a way that contributes to the quality of life. The museum is located at 933 Second Street and is open Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students. Senior admission is $3. For more information go to
