Campus Children's Center earns 3rd Quality Star

Released: 12/02/2011

LSU Alexandria's Children’s Center has been awarded its third star in Louisiana’s Quality Start Child Care Rating System. The center is one of only 40 centers in the state to have earned the rating. The 3-5 star rating in this system indicates that the center provides quality child care based on staff qualifications and the Environment Rating Scales.

Quality Start is a voluntary program for licensed child care centers, designed to recognize, support and increase the quality of child care throughout Louisiana. Participating centers can earn up to five stars.

The application process involved a Staff Qualifications Audit conducted by LA Pathways. The results of this audit are based on education, training, documentation and employment verification of each staff member. LSUA’s Children’s Center conducted a Center Self Assessment which included a review of staff qualifications for the director and all teaching staff as well as a review of administration practices, family and community involvement, and program components. Following the assessment, the Center Improvement Plan was completed.

Out of approximately 1,790 licensed child care facilities in Louisiana, 40 have the 3-Star Rating. The attainment of this 3-Star Rating allows parents and staff members to claim a 100% tax credit on their state tax return for 2011.

The LSUA Children's Center opened in 1999 to serve the children of students, faculty and staff. The center may also be utilized as a learning lab for early childhood education, developmental psychology and pediatric nursing classes. The center was established with private funding through the LSUA Foundation and is supported through private gifts and a student fee supported by LSUA students.
