Elementary Students to Attend Geo-Awareness Multicultural Fair

Released: 11/15/2010

Elementary students from three schools will participate in the Geo-Awareness Multicultural Fair at LSU Alexandria from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday. The twice-yearly event is organized by select classes taught through the Department of Education at LSUA.

Visiting students from Maybel Brasher, Alma Redwine and Simpson elementary schools will receive “passports” and “travel the world” on the university quadrangle. LSUA elementary education students will staff theme booths representing some 20 countries. Members of the Tunica/Biloxi Tribe and the Czech Republic Dancers also will perform.

“We’ve invited approximately 180 elementary students to participate,” said Dr. Diann Norris, assistant professor of education. “This event exposes the young students to other countries and their cultures, and it serves as a practical exercise for our elementary education students, particularly those in the social studies methods course.”

Norris said different elementary schools are invited to participate in the Geo-Awareness Multicultural Fair, which is presented each semester.
