LSUA to Present Shakespeare´s The Merchant of Venice

<p> LSUA&acute;s Empty Space Players will conclude the 2001-2002 season with performances of William Shakespeare&acute;s The Merchant of Venice on April 24-27. All performances will be held on the campus lawn and will begin at approximately 7 p.m. Performances are free and open to the public. Lawn chairs and blankets should be brought for outdoor seating. The cast of 30 players includes students, faculty and staff from LSUA as well as members of the community.

</p><p> The Friday and Saturday performances will be accompanied by a campus-wide celebration of Renaissance called Shakespeare-on-the-Greene sponsored by the Chancellor&acute;s Arts and Humanities Committee. This event will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and at 3 p.m. on Saturday with the grand parade at 5 p.m. each day. </p><p> The afternoon will include various activities including Crossroads Bagpipe and Drum Corps, food booths, art demonstrations, music and crafts. Various LSUA organizations are sponsoring activities and food booths during the festival. The University Gallery will showcase the Student Art Show during the festival and there will also be a Renaissance costume contest. </p><p> As chairman of the Chancellor&acute;s Arts and Humanities Committee, Roy deVille, professor of fine arts, is serving as coordinator for the event. Richard Gwartney, assistant professor of speech and director of theatre, will direct the production. </p><p> The Alexandria/Pineville Area Convention and Visitor&acute;s Bureau, Hixon Funeral Homes and Cleco are serving as co-sponsors for the festival.
