LSUA to Host A+ Alexandria Quiz Bowl

Released: 09/14/2010

LSU Alexandria will host the inaugural A+ Alexandria Quiz Bowl featuring 20 teams from high schools statewide Sept. 25. “It’s lively intellectual combat among some of the brightest students in the state,” said Dr. Bernard Gallagher, LSUA professor of English and one of the event coordinators.

ASH, Bolton, Menard and Pineville will field teams locally. The remainder of the competition will come from 13 schools from around the state, including Shreveport, New Roads and Sulphur. Some schools enter two teams.

The competition begins at 8 a.m. in the Science Building on campus and concludes with the awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Four teams will be eliminated in the morning round, and the remaining 16 teams will be seeded for head-to-head competition until a champion is determined.

Gallagher said the four-member teams will be asked questions about “topics that cover a diverse range of academic subjects that are unknown to the teams until the competition.” Questions will be answered in toss-up, rapid fire, worksheet and toss-up bonus formats.

The A+ Alexandria Quiz Bowl is also supported by the Central Louisiana Community Foundation and United Way of Central Louisiana. Thomas Harmeyer, executive director of the foundation, said more than 40 community volunteers will assist with the quiz bowl.
