3 LSUA Teams Earn Recognition at Radiologic Technologist Conference

Three teams of LSU Alexandria radiologic technology students were prize winners in the scientific exhibit competition at the annual Conference for the Louisiana Society of Radiologic Technologists, announced Melissa Whitley, radiologic technology program coordinator in the university’s Department of Allied Health.

LSUA students Misty Bonnette, junior, Hessmer; Meagan Cormier, junior, Bunkie; Jessica Gremillion, sophomore, Plaucheville; and Josie Herring, sophomore, Pineville; won first place for their “Radon: A Home Intruder” project. The exhibit demonstrated acceptable limits of radon in a home, testing for the potentially harmful gas, and how radon can enter a home.

The team of Mike Broussard, sophomore, Oakdale; Whitni McCauley, sophomore, Alexandria; Patrick Morgan, junior, Cotile; and Reece Roard, senior, Olla; captured third place for “Effects of Radiation on Organ Systems.” The project presented information on damage to internal organs when exposed to excessive radiation, including pictures of biological effects.

Honorable mention was earned by Kristin Cloud, sophomore, Alexandria; Mindy Fontenot, senior, Alexandria; Leslie Gauthier, junior, Marksville; and Leah Guillory, sophomore, Grant. Their project, “Biological Effects of Radiation on the Cell,” included cell models and how radiation exposure damages them.
