LSUA Debater Finishes with No. 3 National Ranking

Released: 03/19/2010

Joy Walters, a senior psychology student at LSU Alexandria, finished the season with a No. 3 national ranking among approximately 225 competitors in the Novice Division of the International Public Debate Association (IPDA).

The LSUA Debate Team ended the season with a No. 5 ranking in the Professional Division, No. 10 in the Varsity Division and No. 8 in the Novice Division. LSUA, which restarted its debate program four years ago, finished eighth in IPDA total points.

“Joy Walters was this year’s breakout star for our team much like national champion David Tubbs last year,” said Dr. Kevin Ells, debate coach and assistant professor of communication studies. “She worked very hard to improve her skills, and she deserves the national recognition.” Walters won the Novice Division in tournaments at San Houston State University and Bossier Parish Community College. Walters, who lives in Boyce, is a graduate of Alexandria Senior High.

IPDA competition focuses on rapid critical thinking in oratorical style compared to traditional debate governed by technical rules and reading voluminous evidence into the record.
