LSUA Hosts Region 4 Science & Engineering Fair

Released: 03/05/2010

LSU Alexandria will host the Region 4 Science and Engineering Fair – open to students in grades 5-12 in a nine-parish area -- on March 13 in the Fitness Center, announced Sandra Purifoy, fair director and member of the LSUA Department of Biological Sciences faculty. The public is invited to view the projects from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Winners from Region 4 will compete in the state science and engineering fair at LSU in Baton Rouge. Categories of competition are animal sciences, behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology, chemistry, and computer science. Students from public, private and home schools will compete in the Junior Division (grades 5-8) or Senior Division (grades 9-12).

Organizers are expecting close to 200 entries from Rapides, Avoyelles, Grant, LaSalle, Natchitoches, Sabine, Vernon, Catahoula and Concordia parishes. The event is sanctioned through the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair.

“It is critical that we develop a greater interest in science and engineering among elementary and high school students, and science fairs have been a traditional and effective method of doing that,” said Purifoy. “We invite the public to view the fair, meet the participants and encourage them to continue their exploration of the sciences.”

The Region 4 fair is partially underwritten by Enbridge Pipeline Co. in Houston and ERA Sarver Real Estate in Natchitoches
