LSUA to Dedicate Baseball/Softball Complex Tuesday

Released: 01/26/2010

LSU Alexandria will unveil its new on-campus baseball/softball complex Tuesday during an Opening Day dedication at 2:30 p.m., announced athletic director and baseball coach Dan Purvis. Both LSUA teams start their seasons at 3 p.m., the baseball team against Texas College and the softball team against LSU Eunice in a doubleheader.

“It’s very nice to have a home game truly at home,” said Purvis. “These new facilities have energized our teams and our student body.” The $1.6 million fields were completed in time for fall practice. It’s the first time in the three-year history of LSUA baseball and softball that the Generals have had their own playing fields.

The dedication ceremony includes recognition of the Louisiana Army National Guard for its role in site preparation for the complex and a presentation of colors by the National Guard. LSUA’s new alma mater will be performed by composer Josh Blakesley. The ceremonial first pitches will be tossed by Student Government president Bonnie Longino and Ms. LSUA Jamie Funderburk, and the Chamber of Commerce of Central Louisiana will coordinate an official ribbon cutting.

Admission to the games is available with a canned food item to benefit the Food Bank of Central Louisiana. An Opening Day pep rally will be held by the students at 1:30 p.m.

LSUA participates as an NAIA independent. Both teams earned regional post-season playoff berths last year.

Former LSU five-time national champion baseball coach and athletic director Skip Bertman will be featured speaker at the LSUA athletic banquet Monday at 6 p.m. Tables for eight are available for $300, and Gold Level tables for 10 are $500. Individual tickets are $45. Tickets may be purchased by calling 473-6475 or 473-6579.
