LSUA 'Varsity' Wins Oak Tree Swing Debate Tournament

The LSU Alexandria debate team captured the Varsity Division championship at the second annual Oak Tree Swing Debate Tournament. Nine universities from four states, represented by 76 debaters, participated in the tournament hosted by LSUA.

David Tubbs, a senior history major and last year’s national Novice Division champion, won the Varsity Division title in only his second varsity competition. Tubbs claimed the championship by winning all four elimination rounds after finishing second in the regular rounds.

Jackson Laningham, a freshman political science major and former Bolton High School debater, won all six rounds of regular varsity competition before losing in an elimination round. Laningham won 1st Place Speaker in his second varsity competition and captured an octofinalist medal.

Paul Medica, a sophomore business student from Alexandria, also was an octofinalist medal winner in varsity debate. Lei Prenell, a senior psychology major from Alexandria, was a quarterfinalist in the Novice Division, finishing fourth in a field of 30.

Louisiana College finished first in the Novice and Professional divisions.
