Drs. Corbat, Joiner Appointed to Interim Administrative Posts

Released: 07/23/2009

Dr. Carol Corbat has been appointed interim vice chancellor for academic and student affairs at LSU Alexandria following the resignation of Dr. Tom Armstrong, announced Dr. David Manuel, chancellor. Armstrong will remain on the LSUA faculty as a professor of history.

Dr. Dorothy Lary, who has been chairwoman of the Department of Nursing for the last five years, has retired. Dr. Haywood Joiner, chairman of the Department of Allied Health, will replace Lary on an interim basis.

Both appointments are effective Aug. 15.

Armstrong joined the LSUA administration in January 2005. “During this time Dr. Armstrong has been instrumental in helping develop new baccalaureate degree programs and extending the university’s outreach into the City of Alexandria and Central Louisiana,” Manuel said. “Both of these efforts have resulted in a stronger platform for growth of LSUA, and I am most grateful for his bringing these to conclusion.”

Armstrong, whose academic specialties are American social history and Southern history, earned a doctorate from the University of Virginia and has taught at four universities.

This is Corbat’s second interim vice chancellor assignment, having served in that capacity in the mid-1990’s. Corbat also has held a combination of leadership positions in the areas of institutional research and institutional effectiveness. She has been chairwoman of the Department of Biological Sciences for the past three years.

Dr. David Huey, professor of biology, will assist in the biology department’s administrative duties.
