$2,500 Offered for Winning Alma Mater Entry

Released: 07/02/2009

LSU at Alexandria needs an alma mater, and the university’s 50th Anniversary Committee is sponsoring a contest to select an official school song. The winning songwriter will receive $2,500, and the alma mater will be heard publicly for the first time on opening night of the Generals’ new on-campus baseball/softball complex in early February.

Songwriters should submit an original composition on CD, including a score sheet with lyrics and music, to LSUA Alma Mater, Box 42, LSU at Alexandria, 8100 Highway 71 South, Alexandria, LA 71302. A contest entry form and copyright assignment agreement also must be included. Entries must be received before Nov. 1 to be considered.

Contestants may submit a maximum of three entries. The winning alma mater will be announced no later than Dec. 1. Additional information, rules and entry forms are available from Dr. Richard Elder, associate professor of psychology, at 427-4448 or relder@lsua.edu, and Dr. Callum Johnston, associate professor of early childhood education, at 473-6455 or cjohnston@lsua.edu.

A selection committee composed of LSUA students, faculty and staff and members of the community will determine the winner. Songwriters who want their works returned must include a self-addressed stamped envelope with their entry.

LSUA, which opened in the fall of 1960, will celebrate its golden anniversary with a series of events throughout the 2009-10 academic year.
