Annual LSUA Renaissance Festival Set April 24-25

The 10th annual Renaissance Festival sponsored by LSU at Alexandria is scheduled April 24-25 on the university quadrangle, announced coordinator Tammy Monk. The celebration of Elizabethan England – a time of cultural and artistic awakening -- opens at 2 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday. The event is free and open to the public.

A presentation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” widely regarded as one of William Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, highlights the festival nightly at 7:30. The outdoor play will be performed by the school’s Empty Space Players under the direction of Richard Gwartney, associate professor of theatre and communication studies.

Other events include jousting and related Renaissance re-enactments by the Society for Creative Anachronism, The Daughters of Scheherazade belly dancing troupe, classical guitarist John DiChiaro, and games and contests appropriate to the time. Musicians, choral groups, actors, dancers and artists in period costumes also are part of the festival. More than 25 booths featuring arts, crafts and food will be available.
