Ms. LSUA Pageant Set for April 18

Five students will compete in the 49th annual Ms. LSU Alexandria pageant April 18 at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center in Alexandria, announced Kathy Wimmert, pageant director. General admission tickets are available for $6, and tickets for LSUA students are $3. Tickets for the 7 p.m. event are available at the door or the Office of Auxiliary Services on campus.

Contestants are Tiffany Jo Ayers, a sophomore theatre and English major from Pineville; Jamie LeAnne Funderburk, a sophomore general studies major from Woodworth; Kathy “Michelle” Grice, a junior biology major from Pollock; Nikki Jeanette Mertens, a freshman business major from Marksville; and Kasey Lynn Perkins, a freshman biology major from Lecompte.

Ms. LSUA receives a $1,000 Chancellor’s Scholarship and will represent the university at several functions during the 2009-10 academic year. The first runner-up receives a $500 scholarship. Other awards are Scholastic Achievement, Ms. Congeniality, People’s Choice, Director’s Award and second runner-up.

Contestants compete in casual and evening wear categories. They also will be asked a question pertaining to their platform topics. Contestants will have participated in interviews with three judges from the community prior to the pageant. Each coed has a mentor from the LSUA faculty or staff.

The Ms. LSU Alexandria pageant is open to all female students regardless of age or marital status.

The reigning Ms. LSUA, Alonna LaTrice Richard, a sophomore nursing major from Mamou, will participate in the pageant and crown her successor. The event will be emceed by Missy Laborde, acting director of institutional advancement and a member of the Department of Arts, English and Humanities faculty.
