Dr. Jones Publishes Article in Writing Education Book

Dr. Ginger Jones, professor of English in the Department of Arts, English and Humanities at LSU at Alexandria, has contributed a chapter to the recently published book Education Landscapes in the 21st Century: Cross-cultural Challenges and Multi-disciplinary Perspectives. Published by Cambridge Scholars Press in London, the book is intended for university professors.

Jones’ chapter, “Teaching Writing Across Cultures,” addresses how teachers can understand and comment on the work of writers who are members of a minority population. Her contribution deals with techniques for teaching writing that include the use of dialect. “The idea is to allow students to determine whether non-standard or standard English has greater impact in particular writing and why,” Jones said.

The book is edited by Iris Guske, a Danish professor of communication studies in Germany, and Bruce C. Swafford, professor of communication at Regent University. It discusses “culture-bound teaching paradigms and applications of up-to-date theories in cognition, language acquisition, intercultural communication and technology-based education,” according to Jones. An international compilation of college professors wrote chapters for the book.

Jones, whose Italian grandparents immigrated to Louisiana, has written a chapter, “Whose South Is It Anyway: Italians in Louisiana,” for American Dreams: Comparative Dialogues in U.S. Studies, and she contributed a chapter, “Proulx’s Pastoral: Brokeback Mountain as Sacred Space,” in Reading Brokeback Mountain, a book edited by Dr. James R. Stacy, LSUA professor of theatre and communication studies. Jones also has published articles in French journals about female immigrants to Louisiana and author Paul Auster.

Jones, a former Fulbright Scholar to Montenegro, has taught at LSUA for six years. She holds an undergraduate degree from Quincy University and a master’s and doctorate from the University of Missouri.
