Ells Publishes, Presents on Environmental Communication

Released: 11/26/2008

Dr. Kevin Ells, LSU at Alexandria assistant professor of communication studies, had an article published in the November edition of Environmental Communication: A Journal of Nature and Culture. The article, “Ecological Rhetoric through Vicarious Narrative: The Enduring Significance of Garrett Hardin’s The Tragedy of the Commons,” argues that Hardin’s 1968 essay on human overpopulation remains relevant to mainstream environmental advocates despite the author’s extreme social and political views.

Ells also recently presented three papers at the National Communication Association convention in San Diego. The papers applied American philosopher C.S. Peirce’s ideas to media studies, communication education and environmental communication. One presentation was part of a panel discussion on semiotics, the study of signs and their interpretation. The other two were competitively selected from submissions nationwide by the Media Ecology Association and the Environmental Communication Division of NCA.

Ells coaches the Speech and Debate Team and is faculty adviser to the LSUA chapter of Lambda Pi Eta National Communication Honor Society.
