Dr. Mardi Allen, a nationally known family psychologist, will be featured speaker at the annual Thanksgiving Psychology Forum sponsored by the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at LSU at Alexandria. Her presentation on adoption will be at noon on Nov. 26 in the Science Building auditorium at LSUA. It is free and open to the public.

Allen, who frequently discusses children’s and other mental health issues during radio and television guest appearances, has earned numerous professional awards, including a Congressional Fellowship and the Heiser Award from the American Psychological Association. She has co-authored two books on adoption, “The Basics of Adoption: A Guide for Building Families in the U.S. and Canada” and “Adoptive and Foster Parent Screening.”

“Dr. Allen is an excellent speaker, and her presentation will be quite interesting and helpful to people who are considering adoption, those who have adopted children, and psychology professionals,” said Dr. Richard Elder, associate professor of psychology at LSUA and event coordinator. “She will discuss the psychological aspect of fitting an adopted child into the family and the nuts and bolts of adopting.”

Allen maintains a private practice that specializes in children and families.

This is the fifth Thanksgiving Psychology Forum hosted by LSUA. Other topics have included the hiring process, positive psychology, emerging psychology, and race, religion and respect. Additional information is available by calling the Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at 473-6470.
