LSUA Sponsors Cultural Day Trip to Shreveport

The public is invited to join members of the LSU at Alexandria community in a cultural day trip to Shreveport which will include visits to The Norton Art Gallery, Meadows Museum of Art and Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. The trip is scheduled Oct. 18 and costs $17 for the general public and $12 for LSUA students. A tour bus will leave the campus at 8 a.m. and return by 11:30 p.m.

The Norton Art Gallery features a notable collection of 19th century American landscapes, including many from the Hudson River School. It’s also hosting a special exhibit of some 50 paintings and 15 sculptures from artists worldwide who specialize in canine subjects. The Meadows Museum of Art, which is on the Centenary College campus, houses the Indochina collection of Jean Despujols and works by George Grosz, Emilio Amero, Mary Cassatt and Alfred Maurer.

The Shreveport Symphony, with guest soloist Janice Fehlauer, will feature music from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8.

Tickets must be purchased by Oct. 16. They are available from the university’s Department of Continuing Education, 473-6495. Additional information may be obtained from Dr. Eamon Halpin, professor of English and chairman of the Chancellor’s Arts and Humanities Committee.

Halpin said a trip to Dallas for the King Tut Exhibit is tentatively planned in the spring. Recent excursions have included cultural trips to Ft. Worth, New Orleans, Houston, Jackson, Miss., and the Texas Renaissance Festival.
