Cavanaugh Lecture Series

Released: 04/15/2008

Dr. Owen Elmore, assistant professor of English, will discuss the importance of narrative in Southern literature of the Civil War in the Cavanaugh Public Lecture series at LSU at Alexandria on April 23. The lecture will be held in Bolton Library on campus at 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

The title of the presentation, which is the last in the Cavanaugh Public Lecture series this school year, is “A Singular Fanaticism: Sam Watkins’ Civil War of Memory.” Watkins, a Confederate soldier, published his memoirs in 1882, and it has recently been republished with revisions he made shortly before his death in 1901. The lecture should appeal to people with a literary or historical interest in the Civil War.
