Kayla Hassell Wins Art Scholarship

Released: 02/21/2008

Kayla Hassell, a senior at Pineville High School, won the second annual Chancellor's Art Scholarship to attend LSU at Alexandria.

Hassell's winning entry included an acrylic still life of bottles and a drawing of cotton bolls.

Roy deVille, LSUA professor of fine arts and the university's gallery director, said Hassell's work represented "an impressive return to the formal conception of subject matter."

The competition included several dozen entries, which will be displayed in the near future at the Youth Arts Council of America show in Alexandria. "The judges noted an encouraging trend toward realism from high school art students," said deVille, "and that's a necessary and important foundation from which to expand."
