LSU Alexandria partnering with LSUS to offer additional programs

Released: 12/23/2007

An agreement between LSU at Alexandria and Southern University at Shreveport will allow students to pursue careers in polysomnography (sleep study), surgical technology and funeral services administration, according to Dr. Haywood Joiner, director of the Department of Allied Health at LSUA.

The general education courses in each field of study will be taught at LSUA, and the professional courses will be offered through compressed video from Southern at Shreveport at the Learning Center for Rapides Parish at England Airpark. "The two universities have collaborated so that students can earn their degrees in these fields without having to travel outside the area," said Joiner.

Polysomnography, a certificate program, normally requires two semesters to complete. The general education requirements are anatomy/physiology, college algebra, and public speaking. Surgical technology, a two-year program, requires English composition, college algebra, general statistics, public speaking, general psychology, fine arts, and anatomy/physiology in addition to the professional courses. Funeral services administration, also a two-year program, requires general education courses in computer science, anatomy/physiology, accounting, general psychology, public speaking, general statistics, college algebra and English composition.

Registration at LSUA for these courses is Jan. 9-10 for the spring semester.

Haywood also said LSU at Alexandria and LSU at Eunice are continuing a similar agreement to offer an associate of science in respiratory care degree.
