Released: 12/23/2007

Dr. Thomas Armstrong, LSU at Alexandria vice chancellor for academic and student affairs, has been awarded the Meritorious Service Award by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. SACS is the accreditation organization for 11 states and educational institutions in Central and South America.

“This is a significant institutional and personal honor,” said Dr. H. Rouse Caffey, interim chancellor at LSUA. “Dr. Armstrong is richly deserving of this award for many years of exceptional leadership on behalf of SACS.”

Armstrong has been chairman of all but two of the 26 visiting accreditation teams to which he has been appointed by SACS, and he is a former chairman of the annual SACS meeting. The award was presented at the recent annual SACS meeting in New Orleans attended by more than 3,800 representatives from 800 institutions of higher learning.

Armstrong, who has been at LSUA for three years, has worked with the Commission on Colleges at SACS for more than 20 years.
