Register now for Annual YouthLearn! Program

Released: 05/04/2007

LSU Alexandria is offering a new challenging, week-long program this summer for students who have completed grades 6, 7 and 8.

YouthLearn! is an educational enrichment program for students who have at least a “B” average or are certified gifted.

It will be held from June 18-22 on the LSU Alexandria campus. Daily activities begin at 12:50 p.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.

The registration fee is $150. The fee for each additional student in the same family is $135 per child. The cost pays for program tuition, class materials, a YouthLearn! t-shirt and daily snack. Participants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Class placement is made on a first-come, first-served basis. Also, people who sign up after Friday, June 1, must add a $25 late-registration fee.

Participants will be able to choose from among a variety of classes taught by LSUA employees and local professionals with expertise in the subject areas.

The classes and their descriptions are as follows:

Computer Lagniappe: Learn “a little something extra” about computers. Visit, learn how to make sure you are safe while accessing the internet and learn how to burn a CD. Keyboard shortcuts will be learned using Microsoft® Word and you will create a presentation using Microsoft® PowerPoint.

Detective in the Making: Homicide, computer crimes, arson ... whatever the crime, before evidence can be submitted to the crime lab, it must first be properly collected and documented by law enforcement. As the detective, students will have hands-on training on retrieving prints left by hands, shoes, and tires. Students will collect other evidence and properly bag and tag it. Participants will also experience the proper way to preserve, photograph, document, search, and draw crime scenes for use at trial.

Golf: Are you the next Tiger Woods? It’s time to find out. Learn the basics of golf - putting, long game, short game and make sure you learn how to talk like the pros. Is it a bogey or a birdie? All equipment provided.

Having Fun with your Digital Camera: Do you want to take great pictures of your friends and family? We will learn how to make people laugh so they make interesting pictures. See how taking pictures through colored glass can make your pictures have that WOW look to them. You will come out of this class as one of the top photographers in your neighborhood! Camera not included.

In the News: This course will introduce students to the basics of journalism and newswriting. Career opportunities in journalism and mass media will be discussed. The class will identify and develop news stories for inclusion in a YouthLearn newsletter which will be distributed at the end of the program.

Lights up on Literature! Learn how to take a popular book and turn it into a screenplay. The classroom will become our stage as we act our screenplays out on the final day.

Math Fun: Who knew math could be so fun? Students will participate in hands-on projects using mathematical data and statistics.

Write On! Are you creative? Full of ideas? Turn your imagination into a work of art. We’ll explore fiction and nonfiction writing, as well as the ins and outs of publishing. All participants will submit at least one piece to a magazine or publishing house.
